Rob Wainwright (born 1967 in Carmarthen, Wales) is the current director of Europol, the European law encorcement agency that handles criminal intelligence.

Education

Rob Wainwright has a BSc degree from the London School of Economics. He speaks Welsh, English and Spanish.

Career

Rob Wainwright joined the U.K. Civil Service, where he held various managerial functions, including law enforcement, combating organised crime, counter-terrorism and intelligence analysis.

Europol

Rob Wainwright joined Europol for the first time in 2000, heading the Liaison Bureaux of the United Kingdom. Two years later, having received a promotion, he joined the National Criminal Intelligence Service, overseeing international operations and developing and implementing strategies against illegal immigration.

From 2006 on, Rob Wainwright was the Chief of the International Department of the Serious Organised Crime Agency. In this position, he was leading 20.000 law enforcement cases each year, as well as establishing the international strategy and operational capabilities, of the newly formed agency. His mandate extended from S.O.C.A.'s international operations and global partnerships, to the worldwide network of S.O.C.A. liaison officers.

In April 2009, Rob Wainwright succeeded Max-Peter Ratzel as the Director of Europol.
